This article begins with – It was in 1982, in the small village of Cantal in the rural heart of France, that a group of 66 local mayors started selecting villages with a rich cultural heritage to revive their fortunes. Les Plus Beaux Villages de France was born.
The association, which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary, has just launched its annual guide showcasing France’s 164 most beautiful villages.
The country may offer more pretty villages than you can shake a baguette at, but not all beaux villages are equal. Those that make the illustrious list must have “an exceptional history, charming location, well-preserved landscape and unique savoir-faire,” says Alain Di Stefano, president of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.
